CATHEDRAL

A man kneels by his dive gear. It’s late afternoon on the Limestone Coast. He has a story to tell. It starts in the water. A powerful, visceral and form-busting new work by award-winning South Australian born playwright Caleb Lewis, Cathedral is a thriller, a family drama and an epic journey of self-discovery. From Mount Gambier to Thailand to the North Sea, from soaring first love to shattering loss to ultimate hope, this powerful story ponders a diver’s life shaped by the ocean, and its power to both upend and heal. Beloved Adelaide actor Nathan O’Keefe (Gaslight, Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors) returns to State Theatre Company South Australia to become the man at the centre of this riveting and suspenseful one-person show directed by rising South Australian star Shannon Rush (Limit). Like Complicite’s The Encounter, Cathedral uses technology and soundscape to provide the theatrical pool in which this compelling story will swim. An ultimately life-affirming piece of storytelling, Cathedral asks the question: do we turn away from our pain, or dive right in?

OUTSIDE WITHIN

ADT returns to South Australia’s regional communities once again in 2022 with a brand-new double bill Outside Within, showcasing the extraordinary work of two of the country’s best First Nations choreographers - ADT’s new Artistic Director, Daniel Riley, and 2021 Associate Artist, Adrianne Semmens. Immerse, from Adrianne, is centred around water, and our essential relationship with both freshwater and saltwater. The work draws on Adrianne's identity as a proud descendent of the Barkindji people of western NSW - freshwater country - who was born and raised on Kaurna land in South Australia - by the saltwater. Her choreography explores both the healing and comfort provided by water, but also our vulnerability in relation to it. Daniel Riley, a Wiradjuri man from western NSW, will develop his first choreographic work for the company early in 2022, with its World Premiere in May in Adelaide before heading out on this tour. Riley’s choreographic work aims to prioritise ideas and ideals that resonate with the next generation of storytellers and audiences; moving between artforms, generations and pushing boundaries offered by traditional performance spaces. Later in 2022, Daniel’s mainstage commission will premiere at the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide. This double bill will also be the first appearance of Australian Dance Theatre’s 2022 Company Artists, welcoming a diverse range of new dancers to the company.

THE BOY WHO TALKED TO DOGS

“This is a place I can be. This is a place I can be me”. Young Marty is a triplet. One of three, only he is the odd one out, the runt of the litter. No one understands him, except his dogs. Locked in the coal shed at night, Martin finds solace from the iciness of a troubled home in 1970’s Ireland, by cuddling up to his German Shepherds, Major and Rex. When he runs away at thirteen, Marty is adopted by a pack of six stray dogs. Together they survive on the road, ignoring “do not enter” signs, dodging trains, stealing milk bottles and meals from open kitchen windows, fizzing and whizzing with energy - outcasts on the outskirts. Emerging as pack leader, Marty discovers deeper ways to communicate with the dogs, learning tricks that lead him back to human company - and a new place where he “can be me”. Based on the true story of Nimbin’s famous “Dogman”, who grew up in Garryowen, Limerick, this tough but tender tale is a celebration of the love of animals we share our homes and lives with, starring acclaimed Dublin actor Bryan Burroughs amidst a dazzling array of shadows, songs and stellar musicianship. DIRECTOR: Andy Packer SONGWRITER: Lisa O’Neill COMPOSER: Quincy Grant DESIGNER: Wendy Todd LIGHTING DESIGNER: Chris Petridis COSTUME DESIGNER: Ailsa Paterson STARRING: Bryan Burroughs, Victoria Falconer, Quincy Grant and Emma Luker Adapted for the stage by Amy Conroy from the book "The Boy Who Talked To Dogs" by Martin McKenna with Skyhorse Publishing and developed with the assistance of Draíocht Arts Centre, Blanchardstown, Ireland

THE LAKE OF SCARS

‘“A deeply moving, evocative and beautiful insight into how a battle to preserve timeless Indigenous culture found hope in a remarkable act of black and white conciliation.” - Paul Daley, author and Guardian journalist. An ancient site, a ticking clock, and the unlikely allies calling for change. The Lake of Scars is supported by The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council, Documentary Australia Foundation, Eucalypt Australia, and The Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation. In a corner of Australia exists a place of astounding natural beauty, archaeological significance, and age-old culture. But the Indigenous scarred trees and artefacts found here are at risk – until an unlikely intergenerational partnership comes forth to save the site for future generations. The Lake of Scars tells a story of allyship, environmentalism and cultural rebirth; a picture of what reconciliation between Aboriginal and European Australians might look like. But is that idea harder than it seems?
