OUTSIDE WITHIN

ADT returns to South Australia’s regional communities once again in 2022 with a brand-new double bill Outside Within, showcasing the extraordinary work of two of the country’s best First Nations choreographers - ADT’s new Artistic Director, Daniel Riley, and 2021 Associate Artist, Adrianne Semmens.

Immerse, from Adrianne, is centred around water, and our essential relationship with both freshwater and saltwater. The work draws on Adrianne's identity as a proud descendent of the Barkindji people of western NSW - freshwater country - who was born and raised on Kaurna land in South Australia - by the saltwater. Her choreography explores both the healing and comfort provided by water, but also our vulnerability in relation to it.

Daniel Riley, a Wiradjuri man from western NSW, will develop his first choreographic work for the company early in 2022, with its World Premiere in May in Adelaide before heading out on this tour. Riley’s choreographic work aims to prioritise ideas and ideals that resonate with the next generation of storytellers and audiences; moving between artforms, generations and pushing boundaries offered by traditional performance spaces. Later in 2022, Daniel’s mainstage commission will premiere at the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide.

This double bill will also be the first appearance of Australian Dance Theatre’s 2022 Company Artists, welcoming a diverse range of new dancers to the company.
